Walk Run Cycle 2011
A great number of Bruneians turned up at the Taman SOAS last Sunday to take part in the HSBC 'WalkRunCycle' charity event, which aimed to raise funds for three local institutions dedicated to the education of special needs children - Pusat Ehsan, KACA and SMARTER Brunei, according to a press release.
The event managed to raise more than $106,000, which will be handed over to the three institutions next week.
The rainy weather didn't dampen the spirit of the charity drive, as people came in droves to join the event that was delayed by half an hour to ensure the safety of the participants.
Mr Vincent Ho, the Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Brunei, "Due to the rain, we were concerned about the safety of the participants, but the turnout was very impressive as I saw children, adults and senior citizens alike turning up to continue their support for this event. This is fantastic and it really says a lot about the people of Brunei and their spirit for charity.""I am confident the event will make good use of the funds from the charity and we look forward to organising more events like this," he added.
Mr Vincent Ho who just bought a bicycle to join the charity drive said, "You can't really appreciate the relevance of the event until you are really on the ground to feel what it is like. It was really great and we also had great support from our team."
The participants were split into various categories: 45km that was open only for cyclists aged 18 years old and above, 8km Walk Run and Cycle event that was open to six years old and above and the 2.4km costume walk.
Also, the event was designed to be family-oriented with many activities held, especially the Hawaiian Shake and Dance competition organised by Red Bull that attracted a lot of interest and participation on the day. While a marching band played songs to entertain the crowd, many were seen having a good time, taking photos with other participants in costumes.
The HSBC WalkRunCycle was supported by Triple Star, SCOTT, Fitness Zone, Laneige, SotoRindu Restaurant & Catering, Red Bull, Kingston Beverage Sdn Bhd and Shopping.com.bn. Other sponsors included Interhouse Co, Armtrix Enterprise, Madmilk, IBIC Sdn Bhd, Gardenia and G4S.
